THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

http://columbusdispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/01/27/aweather.html

I believe this story is newsworthy because it is significant, local, timely, and unusual. It is significant and people need to know the roads are closed, its local because its in Ohio, and its occurring right now, and its unusual that the weather would be this bad that the roads cant be dealt with. I would say this article is most about significance and localness.

ARTICLE 2

Article 2 is significant, local, and balance related. It occurs in Ohio, its significant to citizens because their environment is directly effected by the pollution and balanced because the report presents different angles of perspectives on the issue. One large part of this article is fame though because it draws on the political power players in the city and Barack Obama.

This article about OSU making the decision to hold off on purchasing land is local and balanced. It concerns though who are part of the OSU community. The article also looks at both sides of the issue as well as its background from a nonbiased position.

Part 2

My parents always told me that I could sell ice to Eskimos. They thought I should be a negotiator, a lawyer, a sales person. They saw my persuasion skills at work while I was very young, but doesn’t everyone test those skills out on their parents? I chose communications cause I feel like that’s the pathway to whatever it is that I want to do or will end up doing. Communications and public relations relies so heavy on persuasion because if you can’t convince people of what you are saying there is not bother in saying in. Some of the theories discussed in this chapter I have heard about being in psychology and it made sense that things, for example cognitive dissonance, are in the same boat as understanding persuasion as a technique and as a possible huge guiding force. If you make people comfortable with what you are telling them, they will be more willing to oblige. Public relations needs to be reliable in getting the information out and making sure it caters to its market so that it will be not just listened to but also heard.

COMM 634 Blog Assignment #1 Ex. 1.3

Dear Disgruntle, Unsupportive Relative,

I understand that you have expressed your distaste for the career path I have chosen towards Public Relations and I would like to take a brief moment of my time and yours to explain why I have made this decision in hopes you will then see where I am coming from. Public Relations, to me, is a form of communications which will give me the opportunity to inform, educate, and engage people about all kinds of things.
I may end up doing Public Relations for a plethora of different industries ranging from business to business to entertainment, but no matter where I go I will be using my talents to communicate and connect people with products, services, or people that they need or want to be connected with. Some people, yourself included, feel as though Public Relations is sleazy, dishonest, and manipulative, and I have to disagree with you. Of course there are certain people in Public Relations who aren‘t perfect, but there are these people in all walks of life. This does not make it right, but those who do Public Relations typically do believe in what they are selling.
I pride myself on being a honest person and will carry my virtues throughout my work. I hope that I have clarified what Public Relations means to me and you will now support me in my choice to persue something I find so interesting and worthwhile.

Sincerely,
Sharon

COMM 634 Blog Assignment #1 Ex. 1.1

Exercise 1.1 -Freewriting about Writing

Part 1
Writing is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of something to do for fun. I actually don’t ever think about writing unless I’m told to. I do like reading a lot. I am very envious of those who are extremely creative writers. I think I’m a pretty good writer of things like papers for class and things of that sort. I am an absolutely horrifying speller and I think the fact that my computer always spell checks in any program I am in is hurting me because I never learn how to spell things, I just learn to spell check. I think I could be a better writer if I had a bigger vocabulary, I have a dictionary in my room, but its about the last thing I look at ever. I’m usually entertaining myself with some fiction book or on the computer. There’s this awesome website that you can test you vocabulary and for every word you get correct they donate some food to some needy people and I go on it, its more about the good guessing than learning the vocab for me. Freerice.com, you should try it sometime. I think I’m learning that I am better at digressing than writing. I was shocked when digressing wasn’t misspelled. But was not shocked when my computer automatically added another necessary s to the word misspelled, figures. So, writing, I think I’m ok at writing because my high school had a pretty decent English department and I learned well from my teachers. Improving my writing though will be totally necessary to move forward professionally. Writing, as it said in the chapter, is an essential skill in any field I use my communications background in. I think it would be interesting to read other people’s freewriting, I hope you enjoyed mine. Now on to part two I guess, even though I could totally keep going, and going…

The parts I underlined show that I realize I have a tough time focusing on writing, I believe that learning is a skill that can be taught and learned, and that I will need to improve it to be what I define as successful. I feel as though when I need to be serious about writing I can be, and that is why I can write well for class assignments when I focus. Learning is something that can be practiced and corrected and I will eventually get a good handle on my style. In my mind, being successful professionally will be when I feel satisfied with my work and as I improve my writing skills, and use them in the work force, I will find pride in what I have created with my words.
